In 1993 InterCity were keen to upgrade the remaining Mk2 stock and a joint ABB/InterCity project was undertaken at Derby Litchurch Lane to rebuild vehicle 5809 with different interiors and include a number of refinements such as seat back TV, local information and personal radio. The coach was rebuilt with Irish Rail style swing-plug doors.
